Green Light for GATE
We are happy to announce that the previously hypothetical GA Event to be held in Vancouver this July 26-29th is going ahead; in only two weeks, the response was sufficiently strong to warrant giving the conference its “green light.”
The current slate of presenters includes Eric Gans (UCLA), founder of GA; Ian Dennis (University of Ottawa); Adam Katz (Quinnipiac University); Peter Koper (Central Michigan University); Matthew Schneider (Chapman College); and other scholars active in the GA community.
Meanwhile, space remains for more participants, whether presenting or attending as non-presenters.
We invite you to consider joining us in what will certainly be a stimulating and valuable conference in the beautiful city of Vancouver.
Check out our updated versions of the Call for Papers, the Information Sheet, and Tentative Agenda. Please notice the new institutional endorsements from Kwantlen University College, and the more precise information concerning the very affordable Tower Suites Accommodations Option.
We hope to hear from you before or by February 28th.
Best regards,
Andrew Bartlett

Generative Anthropology Thinking Event
Thursday 26 July — Sunday 29 July, 2007
Vancouver, BC, Canada
Information Sheet: Registration, Travel, Meals and Accommodation
Updated Friday 16 February
The Conference is Going Ahead.
We are pleased to announce that GATE has been given its “green light.” By Wednesday 14 February, we met our minimum number of individuals committed to attending and presenting. Others have expressed interest and hope to confirm their commitments at a later date. Meanwhile, we have openings for more presenters. We have affordable rooms available in the Tower Suites Accommodation Option (see below). We welcome your inquiries about the conference and your proposals (see Call for Papers). Anybody interested in GA who wishes to be part of the conference without giving a paper, as a participant in discussion, is also welcome. Please direct all inquiries to the chief organizer, Andrew.Bartlett@kwantlen.ca.
Our current list of presenters includes, but is not limited to, Eric Gans (UCLA);
Ian Dennis (University of Ottawa); Adam Katz (Quinnipiac University); Matthew Schneider (Chapman College); Peter Koper (Central Michigan University). Other senior members of the GA community will be attending and presenting. Hosting the event are Andrew Bartlett (Kwantlen University College) and Christopher Morrissey (Simon Fraser University).
Registration During the Sessions beginning Friday morning (see “Agenda”), the chief organizer will collect from each participant a fee currently estimated at $50 CAD (based on nine participants). This will defray the costs of meeting room rentals and incidental catering. It is the only “registration” fee required.
Tower Suites Accommodations Option
Participants are free to reserve on their own, of course, hotel rooms in Vancouver, or a bed-and-breakfast in the Kitsilano or Point Grey area (the neighborhoods nearest UBC). However, for those needing a low-cost housing option, we have secured by deposit two suites in the Gage Towers at UBC, conveniently located near our sessions’ meeting rooms. Choosing this option will make it easier for your to enjoy our informal time and free you of the need to travel to and from our meeting rooms on campus.
A brief description: “Each Gage Tower Suite unit is a suite with six bedrooms (five rooms with single beds, one room with a double bed and telephone). Each suite features an in-suite washroom, lounge with TV, and fully-equipped kitchenette. There is to be a maximum of seven occupants per suite, if two occupants share the one double bed. Each suite is sold at a flat rate regardless of the number of occupants. For example, if a tower suite has a flat rate of $290 per night, six occupants would pay $48.33 per night. If one guest were to check out early, the individual rate for the remaining five occupants would be $58.00 each per night for the remainder of the stay.”
For GATE, the flat fee for each of the minimum two suites is $249. per night, for a total of $1494. for both suites (three nights each) for the conference; when taxes are added, the total comes to $1703.16 (CAD) for the weekend, or $283.86 per suite per night. Please understand that the cost goes down as the number of participants using this option goes up. Conversely, however, a higher cost means that the suites feel more “spacious” by virtue of their being shared by fewer people.
Here’s a breakdown of how it will work, i.e., Number of Participants Using Tower Suites Option will determine Price per individual (single rate) sharing the two Tower Suites:
12 people total, 6 each suite
$ 47.31 per night
$ 141.93 Total price per individual for Event (three nights)
8 people total, 4 each suite
$ 70.97 per night
$ 212.90 Total price per individual for Event (three nights)
6 people total, 3 each suite
$ 94.62 per night
$ 283.86 Total price per individual for Event (three nights)
You may email Lisa D’Alfonso, Conference Services Manager at UBC Conferences and Accomodation, for details.
The pertinent website is at: http://www.ubcconferences.com
We are hoping to have a reasonable number of participants committed to staying in the Tower Suites (as opposed to simply attending the Conference). The deadline for committing to a room in the Tower Suites is Monday 16 April. Please inform Andrew Bartlett at Andrew.Bartlett@kwantlen.ca if you intend to use the Tower Suites accommodation option, both to guarantee your spot and to keep others who have committed themselves to this option up to date on the likelihood of its being finalized.
Meals Participants will be responsible for their own meals. There are several food outlets within walking distance of our meeting rooms, where breakfast and lunch may be purchased. Vancouver boasts a powerful range of world-class restaurants, with high-quality cuisine from every continent. Therefore, assuming a group of 9-20 participants, we will make reservations during the conference for the two dinners (Friday, Saturday) at restaurants serving the cuisine of our collective choice. Same for the Sunday brunch.
